Traditional Sasak villages and beach experiences

On this excursion, you get up close to Lombok’s indigenous population in the Sasak villages Banyumulek and Sakarara, where the population lives off traditional crafts such as pottery and weaving. You conclude the tour with a dip in the azure waters on one of the island’s white sandy beaches in the south.

Early in the morning, you are picked up at the hotel and driven to the pottery village Banyumulek, south of Senggigi. Along the way, you pass the small villages Ampenan, Mataram and Cakranegara. On arrival in Banyumulek, an exciting guided tour of the village awaits. Here, you get a great look into how daily life is spent, and you experience the distinctive houses built using the traditional Sasak style, with woven bamboo walls and straw roofs. You also visit one of the village’s pottery centres, where you can watch the wonderful work and even get the chance to create your own souvenir to bring back home.

You are then driven to the village of Sukarara, which is known for its unique weaving techniques and gorgeous, high-quality textiles. Here, carpets, dresses, wash cloths and table cloths are woven using patterns with traditional symbols. You experience how the skilled craftsmen weave using simple hand weaving and learn about techniques, as well as how long it takes to weave a carpet. After a demonstration, you are allowed to take a seat behind the loom and try your own hand at weaving.

After two exciting village visits, it is time to make your way further south to the beach Selong Belanak. The drive takes you along smaller roads, where it is not uncommon to encounter muddy buffalo, dogs, geese, chickens and goats crossing the road whenever they please.

Once you arrive at Selong Belanak, you can enjoy a well-earned dip in the azure waters or take a lovely stroll along the white sandy beach. Afterwards, your tour takes you back to the hotel, and a lunch break is included along the way.
