Below you can read more about some of the fantastic highlights of the country.
Tikal National Park
A tour to Guatemala is not complete without a visit to the wonderful Tikal National Park, which is located in the heart of the jungle of northern Guatemala.
Here, you can explore the iconic Mayan city, which consists of the ruins of beautiful pyramids and mighty temples, scattered around the rainforest. The National Park is so unique that it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It very much testifies to Guatemala’s unique history and cultural heritage, which is characterised by the early Mayan civilisation, which enjoyed its heyday some 600–900 years after the birth of Christ. At its peak, the city of Tikal had up to 100,000 inhabitants.
As around half of the Guatemalan population are descendants of the ancient Mayan civilisation, it remains an important part of the Guatemalan community to this day.
Antigua Guatemala
Antigua Guatemala is a charming colonial city in Guatemala, and is said to be one of the most beautiful cities in Latin America.
The city has a very special atmosphere that testifies to Guatemala’s past as a Spanish colony. Horse-drawn carts rattle against the cobblestones in the pleasant streets, which are lined with colourful colonial buildings, Spanish Baroque churches and vibrant markets.
Antigua Guatemala is one of the most well-preserved colonial cities in all of Latin America – and possibly one of the cosiest, too! The city abounds with cafés in old courtyards, beautiful architecture and welcoming locals.
What’s more, Antigua Guatemala enjoys a unique location, surrounded as it is by three enormous volcanoes, which can be admired all the way from the city centre.
In short, the unique colonial town is a must when visiting Guatemala!
Lago Atitlán
Lago Atitlán is a magnificent, clear lake surrounded by huge volcanoes. Not only is it the deepest lake in Central America, but Lago Atitlán is also located in one of the most scenic areas you can visit.
Nestled between the volcanic slopes are small Mayan villages, where the local peasant farmers cultivate the rich volcanic soil. The inhabitants here are descendants of the Mayan civilisation, as their colourful clothing clearly shows.
The village of Panajachel is one of the most idyllic places on the banks of the lake. It offers outstanding views of the towering volcanoes surrounding the unique lake.
