Teotihuacán, Basilica and Plaza de las Tres Culturas
The first stop on the tour is Plaza de las Tres Culturas, or 'Square of the Three Cultures', which symbolises Mexico's three historical periods. Here, you'll find remnants of the pre-Columbian Aztec ruins, a Spanish colonial church, and modern mestizo Mexican buildings, which house the foreign office.
Next, the tour continues to one of Latin America's largest archaeological sites, the temple city of Teotihuacán, meaning 'The place where men become gods'. You'll walk along the 3 km long Avenida de los Muertos (Avenue of the Dead), where you'll see massive temples and pyramids, dating back as far as 200 BC, though built over an extended period. Notable highlights include the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, where more than 200 sacrificed war captives were discovered, as well as the Quetzalpapalotl Palace, the Moon Pyramid (60 m), and the Sun Pyramid (70 m), constructed in the city's centre atop a 100 m long cave, said to be where humanity was created.
The tour concludes with a visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, capable of accommodating 10,000 people and attracting 20 million pilgrims annually. It is named after the Virgin of Guadalupe, who is the patron saint of Mexico and all of Central America.
