Our package holidays in Mauritius

With TourCompass, you can explore Mauritius on a tour combined with other exciting destinations in Africa, such as Kenya, South Africa, and Madagascar.

Whether you prefer lounging on the beach or exploring the country’s nature or culture, there are plenty of things to do in Mauritius.

Below you can read about selected highlights in Mauritius.

Port Louis

Visit the lively capital of Mauritius, Port Louis, to delve deeper into the country’s rich history and culture.

Here, you’ll find several intriguing museums, such as the Blue Penny Museum, offering captivating insights into the island’s history, dating back to its first settlers, or The Natural History Museum, where you can learn about the island’s wildlife.

Also, take a trip to the city’s vibrant street markets, where you can take in the scents of local spices, taste exotic fruits, and shop for local crafts.

Black River Gorges National Park

Black River Gorges in the southwest of Mauritius is a must-see for nature enthusiasts.

This UNESCO world heritage site sprawls over 2% of Mauritius’ total area and boasts an incredible biodiversity, including 163 of the island’s 311 endemic plant species and all of its endemic bird species. It’s hard not to be impressed by the park’s dramatic landscapes with rolling hills and lush, green rainforest.

Seven Coloured Earth Geopark

Seven Coloured Earth Geopark is one of Mauritius’ most visited attractions and is probably nothing like you’ve seen before.

As the name suggests, the geopark consists of sand dunes in seven distinctive colours: brown, green, red, yellow, violet, and purple. The park is located near the small town of Chamarel on the island’s west coast, close to Tamarin. In addition to the colourful sand dunes, the park offers scenic hiking trails, viewpoints, and the nearby Chamarel Waterfall, the tallest waterfall in Mauritius.

Beautiful beaches

What Mauritius is most famously known for, however, are its exceptional beaches that stretch along the entire coastline of the island. Here, you’ll find everything from serene coves with crystal-clear waters to vibrant beaches filled with a myriad of activities.

The southwest of Mauritius boasts some of the island’s most popular beaches, but no matter which part of the island you visit, you’re sure to enjoy a slice of Mauritius’ exotic beach life.

Palmar Beach – eastern Mauritius

On the east coast of Mauritius lies Palmar Beach – a calm and inviting place with soft, white sand and turquoise waters.

The beach is known for its relaxed atmosphere, making it ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Palmar is also a popular spot for snorkelling, where you can see colourful fish and corals near the shore.

The east coast can be quite windy, which makes Palmar an ideal location to try wind or kitesurfing.

Tamarin and Flic & Flac Beach – southwestern Mauritius

On the west coast, you’ll find Tamarin Beach, renowned for its laid-back vibe.

Surrounded by mountains, the beach offers fantastic views over the Indian Ocean. Tamarin Bay is one of the best places in Mauritius to spot dolphins. There’s also a beautiful coral reef, perfect for exploring on a snorkelling excursion.

Further north lies one of Mauritius’ longest and most famous beaches, Flic en Flac, perfect for both relaxation and activities like paddleboarding or snorkelling.

Grand Baie – northern Mauritius

In the north of Mauritius is the seaside town of Grand Baie. While Grand Baie Beach may not be known as the best on the island, it’s a popular place for water sports.

However, the area around Grand Baie holds many beautiful gems for those wishing to explore the northern beaches of Mauritius. Among these are the smaller, more intimate beaches like Pereybere Beach or La Cuvette Beach, perfect for sunbathing or a swim.

Package holidays to Mauritius including flights from the UK

All of our tours to Mauritius are package holidays.

This means that flights (outbound and return, any domestic flights, as well as flights between countries on a tour), transfers, accommodation in hotels and resorts, and scheduled activities are all included in the overall price.

Typically, you’ll need to cover your own costs for things like drinks and meals (besides those mentioned), insurance, and any necessary vaccinations.

Combination possibilities

All of our holidays to Mauritius can be combined with one or more African countries. Below, you can see which other destinations you can combine with your tour to Mauritius.

South Africa

Combine your holiday with a tour to South Africa, where you can experience the world-renowned Kruger National Park or one of the world’s most iconic cities, Cape Town.

Kruger, South Africa’s largest national park, is home to a wealth of safari animals, including the famous Big Five—the leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant, and rhino—as well as countless other species.

In South Africa, you can also explore Cape Town and discover some of the city’s attractions. Experience the majestic Table Mountain towering over the city, the rolling vineyards nearby, or the historic Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned during apartheid.

Kenya

Combine Mauritius with a safari in Kenya, where you can get acquainted with some of Kenya’s many remarkable national parks.

Nairobi National Park is one of Kenya’s best-known, though smallest, national parks. Here, you can enjoy safari experiences with skyscrapers as a backdrop. Despite being located in a city, it boasts a rich wildlife as it’s the only national park in the world of its kind and is one of the key places for breeding rhinos, offering a chance to see this endangered species in the park.

In Amboseli National Park, the cityscape of skyscrapers is replaced with views of Kilimanjaro. The flat landscape of this national park provides a fantastic view of Africa’s tallest mountain, while you admire the multitude of wildlife, especially the numerous elephants.

Tsavo National Park is Kenya’s largest national park and is, in fact, made up of two parks, Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Tsavo East is known for its striking red soil that gives many of the animals, like elephants and zebras, a unique red hue. Tsavo West‘s landscape is fascinating, with lava fields, hot springs, and a dense growth of both palm and acacia trees. In the park, you might be fortunate enough to spot both hippos and crocodiles.

Madagascar

Combine your holiday with a tour to Madagascar, where unique travel experiences await on the world’s fourth-largest island.

In addition to experiences in the capital, Antananarivo, where you can delve into Madagascar’s intriguing history with a visit to the stunning royal palace, Madagascar offers extraordinary national parks and natural areas where you can encounter the country’s unique flora and fauna.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is one of Madagascar’s most popular parks, where you might, for example, encounter Madagascar’s iconic residents, the lemurs. There’s a good chance to spot the indri lemur, but you might also be lucky enough to see the Sifaka and mouse lemurs, as well as a variety of other species such as chameleons, birds, and stick insects.

Madagascar’s best-known national park, Isalo National Park, features a rugged landscape of sandstone formations and deep canyons, combined with rich wildlife. The park also holds special cultural significance for the local Bara tribe, who regard the area as sacred and bury their deceased in caves high up in the cliffs.

Ranomafana National Park is part of the Atsinanana Rainforest, which is on the UNESCO world heritage list, praised for its vast biodiversity. Here, you can experience towering ferns that set the scene for an adventurous “hunt” for the rainforest’s intriguing animals and rare, wild orchids.

Botswana and Victoria Falls

Combine Mauritius with an adventurous safari holiday to Botswana, one of Africa’s most authentic safari destinations, where you’ll have the opportunity to experience nature and wildlife at its finest.

In the stunning Okavango Delta, one of the world’s largest inland deltas, you’ll enjoy a truly unique safari experience. The delta is a UNESCO world heritage site and a unique ecosystem filled with abundant wildlife, including elephants, zebras, giraffes, warthogs, hippos, lions, and many more.

Further north in Chobe National Park, another unforgettable safari awaits. The park is known for its large elephant population, boasting around 120,000 elephants. Along the Chobe River, elephants, buffalos, and antelopes gather to drink and cool down.

By adding Botswana to your itinerary, you’ll also witness one of Africa’s great natural wonders, Victoria Falls in Zambia. The waterfall is 1,708 meters wide and 108 meters high, with 550 million litres of water cascading into the deep Batoka Gorge every minute. It’s a remarkable opportunity to feel nature’s power up close!

Frequently asked questions about travelling to Mauritius

When planning a holiday in Mauritius, many questions may arise.

Below you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

Where is Mauritius?

Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean, 900 km east of Madagascar and approximately 2,400 km southeast of Africa’s southern mainland.

Is Mauritius a country?

Yes, Mauritius is a country in East Africa.

It’s also referred to as an island state since the entire country is situated on an island.

When is the best time to travel to Mauritius?

The best time to tour Mauritius is during the dry season (Mauritius’ winter) between May and October if you’re seeking the “optimal” weather.

During the dry season, you’ll encounter lower (yet still warm) temperatures, and there’s less rain. In July and August, winds can be stronger, especially on the eastern side of the island, due to the southeast trade winds.

However, there are also advantages to holidaying during the rainy season (Mauritius’ summer). In these months (November to April), there’s more rain, but the warm temperatures are ideal for a beach holiday, and the months are particularly good for snorkelling. Between January and March, there’s an increased risk of cyclones.

Is it expensive to travel to Mauritius?

Prices in Mauritius can vary depending on the season, choice of accommodation, and the experiences you desire.

Generally, Mauritius is not among the cheapest destinations, but with TourCompass, you get a package holiday that includes flights, accommodation, transport, and selected activities. This offers great value for your money and a clear overview of expenses in advance.

Do I need a visa to visit Mauritius?

No, as a UK citizen, you’re likely not required to have a visa for stays under 90 days in Mauritius.

Upon arrival, you must present a valid passport, return ticket, and proof of accommodation. Check more on our practical info page and stay updated on new visa regulations on the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s website.

Do I need vaccinations to travel to Mauritius?

Possibly. Generally, there are no specific vaccination requirements for holidays to Mauritius, but we recommend contacting a specialist, your GP, or a certified vaccination clinic for advice on necessary vaccinations (and those you might already have).

We would like to highlight the yellow fever rules, especially if you’re travelling to Mauritius via a country where yellow fever is present. Some countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination upon entry.
