An unforgettable visit to the Following Giants elephant sanctuary

Meet the elephants Jahn and Mae Thongsuk.

Both grew up in an elephant camp and worked in Koh Lanta’s forest and entertainment industry. In 2017, owner, Charae “Ray” Sangkaow, decided to transform the elephant camp into an authentic, sustainable and elephant-friendly place. Working with World Animal Protection, he fulfilled his dream of creating as natural and safe a sanctuary for the elephants as possible. Jahn and Mae Thongsuk’s days of giving rides and lifting tree trunks are over. Following Giant still actively collaborates with World Animal Protection on training, development and improvement of the elephants’ welfare and environment.

Following Giants is 100% elephant friendly, which means, among other things, that visitors observe the elephants from a distance while they roam freely and happily in their natural environment. Observing the elephants from a distance and allowing them to lead the way gives them the freedom to behave like elephants.

You will be picked up from your hotel and driven to the southern part of Koh Lanta to Following Giants. The day starts with an introduction to the project itself, and you meet your guide, the owner Ray. Your guide will then run through the safety procedure with you, and you will be issued with pair of welly boots. You follow the guide into the jungle, where you will see the elephants grazing, socialising, bathing and even enjoying a mud bath – something they love on hot days! You learn about the elephants’ very different personalities and hear about their tough past life. The guide will also tell you about the jungle’s other wildlife, trees and herbs and how they are used as medicine for elephants and humans alike.

The excursion ends on the observation deck, where a fun and different activity awaits you. You will be making balls out of clay, elephant dung and seeds. Armed with a slingshot, you will then shoot your “seed balls” from the deck, and a few months later they will germinate and become elephant food.

Then it is time for lunch. A delicious vegetarian buffet awaits, which is included in the price.

Finally, the guide will answer any questions you may have and tell you more about the Asian elephant.

A fantastic day with the three happy elephants has now come to an end, and you will be driven back to the hotel, where the rest of the day is yours to do as you please.
