Amid the lush countryside around Manggis, you’ll gain a rare insight into everyday life in Bali, where rice farming, religion, and respect for nature go hand in hand.
At an organic farm, you’ll take an active part in the work in the rice fields and see first-hand how sustainable methods have brought the land back to life.
Over the course of the day, you’ll follow narrow paths along the farmers’ own tracks to the organic rice fields. Here, you’ll meet the farmer, who will share his personal story and explain how organic cultivation is intertwined with Balinese Hinduism and a profound respect for the earth and the natural world. You’ll hear how they moved away from chemical pesticides to a more sustainable approach that has brought life back to the fields.
Depending on the season, you’ll have the chance to take part in the work in the fields. During planting, you’ll kick off your shoes and step into the soft mud as the farmer shows you how to plant the rice seedlings and how to move backwards to give them space to grow. In harvest season, the fields stand golden and ready, and you’ll see how the rice is harvested by hand with sickles, gathered and threshed to preserve its quality. When the rice plants are growing, you’ll help tend them using organic fertiliser produced right on the farm.
What’s special about the rice fields in Manggis is that you can experience all three stages of rice cultivation year-round, making a visit worthwhile at any time of year.
After an exciting day’s work, it’s time to sit down back at Kaura, where you’ll be served a delicious lunch of classic Balinese dishes, brimming with local flavours and prepared with local produce.
