This experience invites you to slow down and get close to a traditional Balinese craft that has been handed down through generations.
You will settle into the tranquil Balinese countryside, where craftsmanship remains a natural part of everyday life. The activity takes place at or near the community hall, where, in informal surroundings, you’ll gain an insight into a living craft tradition. Alongside experienced local weavers, you’ll be introduced to Balinese weaving and the materials used.
The work uses hata wood, a vine-like and flexible fibre that has been used in Balinese weaving for centuries. With patient guidance, you’ll learn to prepare the fibres by peeling, drying, and softening them before you begin the weaving itself. The calm, repetitive motions create an almost meditative atmosphere, allowing your focus to settle naturally on the process.
The experience goes beyond the craft itself. Between weaving sessions, there is time to talk with the local women, offering a candid insight into everyday village life.
