In Costa Rica, approximately 3 hours north of the capital San José, is Monteverde Cloud Forest.

The mysterious cloud forest is teeming with life and definitely a must see on your tour to Costa Rica.

Look forward to experiencing the “forest in the clouds”!

The forest in the clouds – Monteverde’s nature

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve was established in 1972 and is one of Costa Rica’s top attractions.

The rainforest is located at an altitude of 1,440 metres – in the Cordillera de Tilarán mountains – and has been nicknamed “the forest in the clouds” as it is surrounded by low-hanging clouds and mist.

The high humidity contributes to a complex ecosystem where moss, ferns and huge trees thrive. The rainforest is home to more than 3,000 different plant species, including more than 500 different kinds of orchids, making Monteverde one of the most orchid-rich places in the world.

The formation of mist and the scenic dense, green nature give Monteverde a unique and mysterious atmosphere, which is well worth experiencing.

The wildlife in Monteverde

As a country, Costa Rica is known for its exceptional wildlife, and the wildlife in Monteverde is no exception.

The cloud forest is home to a multitude of animal species, including 120 different kinds of mammals, 120 kinds of amphibians and reptiles and more than 600 different species of butterflies.
See, for example, the tapir (baird’s tapir), which can grow to a length of up to 2 metres and weigh up to 300 kilos. The tapir is characterised by its long, trunk-like upper lip, which makes it easier for the animal to consume its food.

Monteverde is also a paradise for bird watchers, who can look forward to experiencing some of the 400 different types of birds that live here, including the quetzal, the hummingbird and the golden-browed chlorophonia.
