Cooking class: Japanese Izakaya dishes

Look forward to an afternoon immersed in the cosy world of Japanese izakaya culture.

Make your own way to one of the side streets by Nishiki Market, where today’s cooking class is hosted by English-speaking chefs who will welcome you into the heart of the Japanese home kitchen.

The class is divided into two parts, and throughout the session you’ll be in expert hands, as the chefs will guide you step by step.

In the first part, you’ll learn to prepare a couple of dishes, which you’ll then have a chance to taste before returning to the kitchen to cook the next ones. Finally, you’ll sit down once more to enjoy the results of your own handiwork.

Among the dishes you’ll learn to make are classic izakaya specialities such as:

  • Stir-fried vegetables (Kinpira Gobo)
  • Seaweed and lotus root salad with miso dressing (Hijiki no Nimono)
  • Tofu fritters with mushroom sauce (Tofu Tsukune)
  • Deep-fried chicken with aromatic sauce (Karaage)
  • Japanese cabbage pancake (Okonomiyaki)
  • Yuzu jelly (Yuzu)

Everything takes place in a relaxed and cosy atmosphere reminiscent of an authentic izakaya bar, where you’ll learn to prepare popular Japanese dishes enjoyed both in local restaurants and many Japanese homes.

Special dietary requirements are, of course, taken into account.
