Evening walk through the enchanting geisha district

Discover Kyoto at its most atmospheric on an evening stroll through the city’s historic geisha districts, as the streetlights flicker on and the old capital is bathed in a golden glow.

You’ll meet your guide at your hotel before setting off on a charming walk through two of Kyoto’s most iconic geisha areas. The first stop is Miyagawa‑cho, one of the city’s five active geisha districts, where you’ll learn about this elegant and deeply traditional art form. Your guide will share stories about the history of the geisha, their training, and the unique lifestyle that continues to this day. Along the streets, you’ll pass beautifully preserved wooden townhouses from the Edo period, complete with delicate latticework and sliding doors, evoking a vivid sense of times gone by.

Your walk will continue along the atmospheric Hanamikoji Street, lined with some of Kyoto’s most exclusive teahouses and restaurants. With a bit of luck, you might catch a glimpse of a maiko or geiko gracefully hurrying to an evening engagement, dressed in exquisite kimonos.

Next, the tour will continue to the Higashiyama area, where you can soak up the distinctive tranquillity and beauty that unfolds as the ancient temples are illuminated by the evening glow. You’ll visit the outer grounds of the Yasaka Shrine, an architectural masterpiece that has served as the city’s spiritual heart since the 15th century.

The evening will conclude in the northern part of the Gion district along the Shirakawa River, where you’ll cross the elegant Tatsumibashi Bridge and take in the view of the shimmering water and beautifully lit houses along the banks. This is where young apprentices once lived during their training, and the atmosphere still brims with poetry and echoes of a bygone era.

The tour ends at Gion Shijo Station, where your guide will be happy to offer suggestions for places to eat or ideas for further exploring on your own.
