Full-day excursion to the UNESCO city of Nikko

Discover Nikko’s magnificent temples, shrines, and natural scenery on an exciting full-day tour north of Tokyo.

Make your own way to the Keio Plaza Hotel in the heart of the Shinjuku district, where you’ll meet your guide for the day. From here, the journey continues by coach towards Nikko. Along the way, sit back and enjoy as the bustling cityscape gradually gives way to more tranquil, scenic surroundings the closer you get to the historic mountain town of Nikko.

It’s no surprise that Nikko is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site – the town is both a spiritual centre and one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural areas. Upon arrival, your first stop will be Nikko’s crown jewel and one of Japan’s most ornate architectural masterpieces, the Toshogu Shrine. Your guide will share fascinating insights into the site’s history and the legendary shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Take time to admire the richly decorated buildings, intricate carvings, and the famous three wise monkeys, beautifully representing the Buddhist principle of seeing no evil, hearing no evil, and speaking no evil.

The journey then continues to the beautiful Lake Chuzenji, located at the foot of the majestic Mount Nantai. The lake was originally formed thousands of years ago following a volcanic eruption, and today the area is a popular excursion spot for both locals and visitors. Here, you can breathe in the fresh mountain air and admire the shifting colours that make Nikko stunning all year round – from cherry blossoms in spring to the rich hues of autumn in October.

Close to the lake lies the Kegon Waterfall, where water plunges almost 100 metres into a deep gorge. This powerful sight, visible for most of the year, has inspired poets and artists throughout history. Your guide will share stories about its role in Nikko’s natural heritage and local legends.

After a day filled with cultural encounters and breathtaking natural scenery, you’ll be escorted back to Shinjuku Station in Tokyo.
