Experience one of Japan’s most unique natural wonders on an atmospheric full-day tour to the charming hot spring town of Yudanaka and the famous snow monkeys of Jigokudani.
You’ll meet your guide at your hotel and together take the express train for an hour to the scenic mountain region north of Nagano. Upon arrival in Jigokudani, a peaceful half-hour walk through the forest awaits, along a winding path lined with tall trees leading you to the park where Japan’s famous macaques roam freely.
The park offers something special throughout the year: in spring, playful youngsters scamper about among the budding green leaves; in summer, lively troops gather by the river; and in autumn, the mountainsides turn shades of red and gold as the monkeys play in the falling leaves. In winter, you can watch them relaxing in the hot springs surrounded by snow. Whatever the season, you’ll have a unique opportunity to observe the monkeys’ natural behaviour and social hierarchy up close.
After visiting the snow monkeys, your journey then continues to Yudanaka, a traditional hot spring town known for its steamy baths and laid-back atmosphere. You’ll have free time to stroll through the town’s peaceful streets or enjoy a well-earned footbath at the station. If you fancy a short walk, you can visit the town’s landmark, Sekai Heiwa Kannon – a 25-metre-tall bronze statue of the goddess of mercy watching over the mountain village.
After a day surrounded by breathtaking scenery, you’ll be accompanied back to your hotel in Nagano, where your guide will be happy to suggest some excellent local restaurants.
