Look forward to an active and scenic morning in the mountains north of Kyoto, where along narrow forest paths, you’ll explore temples and shrines between the two charming mountain villages of Kurama and Kibune.
You’ll meet your guide at your hotel before taking the local train together northwards through a picturesque landscape of verdant valleys and forest-covered hillsides. The hike will begin in the small mountain village of Kurama, known for centuries for its hot springs and the temple Kurama-dera. Before setting off on the trail, your guide will tell you about the area’s history, its Shinto shrines, and ancient traditions.
You’ll then continue along the route, which is around 4.5 kilometres long and takes roughly an hour and a half at a relaxed pace. The path winds through dense forest, occasionally opening up to breathtaking panoramic views across the peaceful mountains. Along the way, you’ll pass small shrines, temple gates, and ancient stone steps while your guide shares stories about the natural surroundings, Buddhist symbolism, and the importance of walking in Japanese spirituality.
Finally, you’ll reach the peaceful mountain village of Kibune, best known for its beautiful Kifune Shrine, dedicated to the deity of water. Here, you’ll have time to explore the charming shrine and enjoy a refreshing drink by the river before the tour concludes.
After a few hours surrounded by nature, your guide will accompany you back to your hotel in central Kyoto.
