Experience one of Japan’s most iconic traditions up close and gain a rare insight into the fascinating world of sumo wrestlers – both in and outside the ring.
Make your own way to the Sumida district, where you’ll meet two former sumo wrestlers who, with humour and passion, demonstrate wrestling techniques, showcase training routines, and share personal anecdotes from their days in the sport.
Your day will begin with an authentic lunch that sets the scene for the experience. Enjoy a traditional chanko nabe – a rich, nourishing stew that sumo wrestlers eat during training to build strength and energy. The meal is served with ice cream and refreshing oolong tea or water.
After lunch, you’ll dive deeper into the proud history of sumo. You’ll learn about the sport’s origins in ancient Japan, where matches were held as tributes to the gods, and discover how sumo still plays a central role in Japanese culture today as the country’s unofficial national sport.
Along the way, you’ll have the chance to ask the wrestlers questions and watch their impressive techniques up close. Finally, you can even step into the ring yourself and challenge them in a friendly bout – a unique, fun, and truly memorable experience that offers a personal encounter with one of Japan’s oldest and most tradition-rich sports.
