Excursion to the Inca ruins at Moray and the salt mines in Maras

This excursion to the Moray Ruins and the salt mines in Maras allows you to explore the beauty of Peru and get right up close to the country’s culture in a fantastic and unique way.

You’ll be picked up from your hotel, after which you’ll head to the Inca ruins at Moray and the salt mines in Maras. The drive is an experience in itself, because you have a view of the snow-capped mountain peaks of the magnificent Andes, while the drive continues through the scenic, lush Urubamba Valley, also known as the Sacred Valley.

On your arrival in Moray, you’ll be greeted by the impressive sight of circular terraces that resemble a kind of natural amphitheatre. This served as an advanced agricultural system for the Incas and was used to experiment with different crops. The terraces have a depth of up to 150 metres, which allowed the Incas to create special conditions for different temperatures and humidity, which could imitate various microclimates. It’s a fascinating place to visit and an important part of Peru’s history.

Your visit to the Moray ruins will give you an understanding of Inca agricultural technology and their respect for nature.

When you’re done exploring Moray, it’s time to experience the salt mines in Maras.

This unique landscape consists of over 3,000 small pools carved into the mountainside, which are filled daily with salt water from a nearby spring. When the water evaporates, it leaves behind a layer of pure salt, which is first harvested and then sold by the local people. The salt mines have been in use for centuries and date all the way back to pre-Inca times. In addition to being an important source of income for the locals, it’s also an impressive sight to behold.

After the visit to the salt mines, you head back to Cusco.
