Imagine a lake with emerald-green water, towering limestone cliffs that occasionally rise vertically out of the water, and small jungle-covered islands. Add the sound of birdsong and the occasional monkey call. That’s the setting for Praiwan Raft House.
The name perfectly describes this unique accommodation: ‘raft house’. Praiwan consists of small bungalows, all floating on rafts in the stunning Cheow Larn Lake within Khao Sok National Park. The bungalows are buoyed by large pontoons and are connected by a long, floating walkway that also leads to the cosy restaurant, where simple and delicious Thai dishes are served.
There are 30 bungalows in total, and we typically use the deluxe rooms, which accommodate two people. Built in a traditional style, they feature walls of woven bamboo, solid wood furniture, and soft white curtains that collectively create a simple and serene atmosphere. The rooms have private bathrooms with cold water showers. All bungalows come with mosquito nets, ceiling fans, and a private veranda overlooking the lake. A kayak and two life vests are also included.
If you’re travelling with children, you can opt for a family room that accommodates up to four people. The decor mirrors that of the deluxe rooms, and includes four life vests.
At Praiwan Raft House, there is no Wi-Fi, and electricity is available only from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – just enough to charge your camera and phone before the silence takes over. In exchange, you get the sounds of the jungle, open windows creating a breeze, delightful homemade food, and a night sky illuminated without artificial light.
Children are very welcome at Praiwan Raft House, but there are no specific children’s areas, and the walkways lack railings. Parents are responsible for supervising their children throughout their stay, and it is recommended to bring a life vest for the little ones.
Praiwan Raft House is not about luxury, but here you will find tranquility, simplicity, and a close connection with nature.
