Gorilla tracking

One of the major highlights in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is the trek in search of mountain gorillas.

The day starts early, and it’s advisable to have a hearty breakfast before driving to the national park’s headquarters. You’ll need energy and reasonable fitness to make the most of the day’s experience. It’s uncertain beforehand which group of mountain gorillas you’ll visit, so the trekking distance to reach your designated group is unpredictable. While you’re getting registered and briefed on the trekking process, scouts are dispatched to locate the gorillas, ensuring that you don’t have to scour the entire forest to find them. Thanks to the scouts, the chances of actually spotting a gorilla troop are quite high.

From the rangers’ headquarters, you’ll set off with guides, hiking through dense tangles of vines and undergrowth to find the gorillas. The heavily wooded terrain is incredibly thick but crisscrossed by numerous animal trails that make access easier. Remember to enjoy the forest walk and keep an eye out for other wildlife and birds.

Once you reach your designated family, you’ll have an hour to spend with the troop. You aren’t allowed to get very close, but it’s not uncommon for the gorillas to come quite near you – if they do, it’s best to remain completely still. They are entirely harmless, but can be quite large, strong, and heavy! Sitting next to these calm giants, observing and photographing them while listening to their grunts and murmurs, is truly extraordinary. It’s an unforgettable feeling to be among these beautiful yet endangered creatures.

After your visit with the gorillas, you will trek back through the forest and return to the lodge. The rest of the day is at your leisure to digest the experiences and review your camera for some great shots.
