Meet the Batwa people
Originally, the Batwa people were native to the forests surrounding the great lakes in the central part of East Africa. As national parks were established (ironically to conserve, among other things, the gorilla populations), the Batwa were relocated from the forests they had inhabited for centuries – sadly resulting in significant hardship.
In 2008, the Batwa Development Program (BDP) was created to assist the Batwa people with education, housing, clean drinking water, and more – while promoting the preservation of their cultural identity as ‘Forest People’.
On this excursion, you’ll enjoy a guided walk in the forest with a Batwa guide who will share insights about the forest, the people, and their original culture. The funds raised go back to the Batwa people and are used to ensure education for the children while also striving to preserve the Batwa culture and tradition for future generations.
The tour can take up to 5 hours and is conducted at a leisurely pace. The paths in the forest are well-maintained, though there are occasional steep areas which most people can manage without difficulty. We recommend wearing closed shoes and long trousers.
