Snorkelling excursion at Caño Island
It’s not just the mainland where nature and wildlife will take your breath away. Approximately 20 km off the coast of Drake Bay lies the Isla del Caño marine reserve. This protected area is considered one of Costa Rica’s top snorkelling spots, and beneath the waves lies a coral reef teeming with tropical fish, turtles, rays, and reef sharks.
You’ll snorkel at two different locations, with each session lasting around 45–60 minutes.
An experienced guide will be with you in the water, on hand to point out and identify the many fascinating marine creatures you’re likely to encounter beneath the surface. Visibility can vary depending on the weather, but it’s generally at its best during the dry season.
Between the two snorkelling sessions, you’ll enjoy a break on Caño Island’s beach, where some fresh fruit will be served. The island also has basic toilet facilities you can use during the break.
After snorkelling, the adventure will continue by boat to the mainland and the beautiful, secluded San Josecito beach. Here, you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch on the sand before the boat returns to Drake Bay.
The boat journey to and from Isla del Caño takes approximately 45 minutes each way, and you might be lucky enough to spot turtles, dolphins – and, during the season from December to March as well as July to November – perhaps even humpback whales.
