Excursion to The Valley of the Sugar Mills

Join us on a 4-hour guided excursion to Valle de los Ingenios – the Valley of the Sugar Mills, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The area covers 270 km2 and consists of the three valleys of San Luis, Santa Rosa and Meyer, which, from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century, were the centre of sugar production in Cuba and home to Cuba’s richest men.

On the excursion, you’ll experience the scenic, lush landscape, the ruins of old sugar mills and the haciendas Casa Guachinango and Casa de Manaca-Iznaga from 1750, where you’ll see the original slave dwellings known as “barracones” and enjoy the fantastic view from the 44-metre-high Iznaga Tower. It was from up here that they kept an eye on the slaves to make sure they didn’t run away when working out in the sugar cane plantations. Finally, you pay a visit to La Casa del Alfarero, a pottery shop where you’re given a demonstration of how the beautiful ceramics are made.

The excursion includes lunch at a local restaurant.

Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended.
