Snow-covered volcanoes and the colourful Otavalo crafts market
Discover the stunning Imbabura province north of Quito, celebrated for its majestic volcanoes, idyllic lakes, and villages where indigenous traditions thrive. At the renowned Otavalo crafts market, you can marvel at the vibrant and impressive handicrafts that the area is famous for.
Settle in and enjoy the spectacular scenery en route to Otavalo. Along the way, there are brief stops in the Calderón and Guayllabamba valleys, where you can capture photographs and sample local delicacies.
You’ll pass both the snow-capped Cayambe volcano, towering at 5,790 metres, and the Imbabura volcano, standing at 4,630 metres, at the foot of which lies Otavalo.
In Otavalo, you will visit the famous market where you can find handwoven ponchos, scarves, blankets, and other traditional crafts made by local artisans and weavers. The market is open daily, but is at its largest and most vibrant on Saturdays. It’s the perfect place to purchase unique and affordable souvenirs, or simply wander around and soak up the atmosphere and vibrant cohar lours.
The tour continues to the charming town of Cotacachi, renowned for its high-quality leather goods.
Before you return to Quito, there is a stop at the beautiful crater lake Cuicocha, which features two small islands nestled in its clear volcanic waters.
Lunch (at your own expense) can be enjoyed at a cosy restaurant in Otavalo.
Remember to bring: Good shoes, a rain jacket, a warm sweater for the afternoon, a sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and cash if you wish to shop at the market.
