“Hostel”, you might think. “I’m not staying in a hostel.” But wait, let us tell you about Père Pedro!
Perched on a hilltop high above Antananarivo, offering a splendid view of the city, sits Père Pedro. Now, it is technically a hostel with some rooms having bunk beds, but it also offers regular double rooms with private baths and toilets. You’ll find plenty of hot water in the showers – you just need to let it run for a bit.
The rooms are spacious and designed with a hint of Scandinavian style: light wood furniture, bright concrete floors, large sisal rugs, and cushions and curtains in soft yet colourful fabrics. While there’s no fridge or TV in the rooms, the Wi-Fi is excellent throughout. Night temperatures in Antananarivo are generally quite tolerable, but if it does get warm, there’s a ceiling fan.
You won’t find traditional hotel staff at Père Pedro. The receptionist also serves food in the restaurant, and if you fancy a drink at the bar, it’s usually the same person you need to ask.
However, the kitchen staff are specially selected for their roles. The cosy restaurant offers well-prepared breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the coffee is truly splendid! There’s also a small bar serving wine and simple cocktails. If the weather permits, head up to the rooftop terrace to enjoy the view – and possibly the sunset – over Tana.
What’s truly special about Père Pedro is that any profits go towards charity. You’re staying in a district called Akamasoa, which is also an NGO and humanitarian organisation helping impoverished people in Antananarivo. Additionally, Père Pedro creates jobs for the local population in the area.
Père Pedro isn’t “just” a hostel. It’s a chance to help make someone’s life better while enjoying a restful night’s sleep and the world’s best coffee!
