Full-day excursion to Fes

Fes is Morocco’s oldest imperial city and home to the country’s largest and most authentic medina.

Founded in 789, the city has grown over the centuries into a vibrant historical centre, boasting more than 9,000 narrow streets and alleyways. Here, you can discover everything from carpet workshops and smithies to the city’s iconic tanneries, where colourful vats and the scent of leather speak to a proud tradition of craftsmanship. The densely packed buildings, bustling market squares, and historic madrasas and mosques make the medina a fascinating labyrinth teeming with life, where history, culture, and daily routines coexist side by side.

While the real atmosphere is best experienced in the heart of the winding alleyways, you’ll gain a true sense of the city’s scale from one of the two ancient fortresses that stand proudly atop the hills overlooking Fes. From here, the medina unfolds beneath you like a sprawling, maze-like carpet – an unforgettable sight that offers a whole new perspective on the city’s vastness.

Another highlight of Fes is the royal palace, located just outside the medina. Although entry isn’t permitted, the majestic golden gates, framed by blue-green mosaics, never fail to impress visitors. The seven gates symbolise the seven heavens in Islam, a testament to the continuing legacy and significance of the monarchy. Just behind the palace lies the old Jewish quarter, Mellah, where the architecture tells the story of Fes’s cultural diversity and the coexistence of its communities through the ages.

During the day, you’ll enjoy lunch at one of the traditional riads in Fes.
