Guided walk in Franz Josef Glacier Valley

This walk is perfect for nature lovers! Venture off the beaten track and experience the raw beauty of Franz Josef Glacier Valley up close.

Discover the awe-inspiring temperate rainforest as you approach the remarkable Franz Josef Glacier, one of the world’s lowest-lying and most unique glaciers.
Stroll at your own pace past sparkling glacial rivers and streams, through dense podocarp forest, and uncover nature’s hidden gems like wild mushrooms, indigenous snails, and an abundance of orchid species. Listen for the sound of waterfalls and birdsong all around, and keep your eyes peeled for a chamois or tahr against the snowy mountain slopes.

Your experienced guide will bring the journey to life with fascinating tales about the region’s history, its flora and fauna, and the glaciers and geology, offering you a unique insight into the valley’s fascinating and intricate ecosystem.

Along the way, there are stops to enjoy a cup of tea and a biscuit, all set within this enchanting landscape.

Whether the sky is clear and blue or shrouded in magical mist, this is truly an unforgettable immersion in nature. It almost feels like stepping straight into the world of Narnia or The Lord of the Rings.

Please note: On this tour, you will see the Franz Josef Glacier but you will not walk on it.

Start and end point: Franz Josef Glacier Valley Eco Tours Office, Franz Josef (address and time are provided on your voucher). Please make your own way to and from the starting point, and remember to arrive at least 15 minutes before the tour begins.

Duration: Approx. 3 hours (9:30 am – 12:30 pm).

Difficulty: Easy. This walk is suitable for anyone of average mobility.

Group size: Maximum 10 people.

The price includes: Transport, local guide, walking poles, rainwear, and an umbrella if required.

Remember to bring: Warm clothing, wind- and waterproof jacket, walking shoes, camera, sunscreen, water, and snacks.

Please note: The tour departs 1-2 times daily, except December 25th. The walk is weather dependent. In the case of severe weather, you’ll be offered to reschedule or receive a refund.
A minimum of two participants is required for the tour to proceed. If this minimum is not met, your money will of course be refunded.
