Helicopter tour with landing on Franz Josef Glacier
Ever fancied seeing the breathtaking Franz Josef Glacier from the sky and standing right at the heart of its frozen world? Then this is the adventure for you!
Your journey begins in Franz Josef with a spectacular helicopter flight over the lush rainforest, treating you to sweeping views of the West Coast, the Tasman Sea and the dramatic surrounding mountains.
You’ll soar onwards over the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps until you reach the awe-inspiring icefall of the Franz Josef Glacier.
Your helicopter lands on the icefall, approximately 1,300 metres above sea level, where you’ll have the chance to step out and feel the ancient glacial landscape beneath your feet. Accompanied by an experienced guide, you’ll have around 15 minutes here to take stunning photographs, listen to fascinating stories about the glacier’s history and geology, and simply savour the magnificent moment.
This experience does not include hiking and is ideal for anyone with normal mobility who wants to get up close to one of the world’s most extraordinary natural phenomena.
Start and end point: Franz Josef Glacier Guides Base, Cron Street, Franz Josef (the address and time will be shown on your voucher). Please note, you’ll need to arrange your own transport to and from the starting point, and you should arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.
Duration: Approximately 1 hour in total (including briefing, flight, and about 15 minutes on the ice).
Difficulty level: Easy. The tour is suitable for anyone with normal mobility.
Group size: Maximum 6 people per guide.
Included in the price: Helicopter flight, guide, and glacier landing.
Remember to bring: Warm clothing, a windproof and waterproof jacket, sturdy walking shoes or trainers, sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen, and your camera.
Please note: The tour departs twice daily in the morning, except on 25 December.
A minimum of two participants is required for the tour to go ahead. If this minimum is not reached, you will receive a full refund. The tour is subject to weather and safety conditions. If it is cancelled due to the weather, you will of course get your money back.
The minimum age is 4 years old. The maximum weight limit is 115 kg per person.
Helicopter flights involve a degree of risk, and you must sign a risk awareness declaration in order to take part. Please check with your travel insurance provider to ensure you are covered for this type of activity.
