Mitai – a cultural Māori experience (evening)

Step into the world of the Mitai village and discover how traditional Māori stories are brought to life through a captivating cultural performance, followed by an authentic hangi dinner.

Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed with a traditional pōwhiri (welcome ceremony), then treated to a powerful and enthralling performance in which Māori tales and customs are shared through song and dance.

Highlights include witnessing Māori warriors paddle down the Wai-o-Whiro river in a traditional waka (war canoe).
The dynamic show features performers in traditional dress, complete with distinctive facial and body markings, which are specially painted for the occasion.

After the mesmerising display, enjoy a traditional hangi dinner, where tender meats and vegetables are slow-cooked underground (hāngi) on hot stones. The gentle steaming infuses the kai (food) with a delicious signature smoky flavour. Dinner is served buffet-style at communal long tables.

Following your meal, set off on a guided evening walk through the surrounding forest. Highlights include the remains of the historic village, the sacred natural spring Te Puna Tapu o Tūhoe, and a magical experience where glow worms light up the night.

After this memorable evening, you’ll return to Rotorua.
