Tickets for whale watching in Kaikoura – self-drive

Experience one of New Zealand’s most breathtaking natural wonders on an unforgettable whale watching tour in Kaikoura.

After parking your car and checking in at Whale Watch Kaikoura (at least 30 minutes before departure), you’ll be taken by bus to South Bay Marina (around a 10 minute drive), where you’ll board a modern catamaran specifically designed for whale watching. The captain and crew will be waiting to ensure you have the very best chance of spotting whales and other marine creatures and seabirds.

Throughout your tour, experienced guides and informative screens on board will share a wealth of knowledge about the animals’ habits and ways of life.

Sperm whales can be spotted in the area all year round and are typically the most common. Depending on the season, you might be fortunate enough to see migrating humpback whales, pilot whales, blue whales, southern right whales, and even orcas. New Zealand fur seals, dolphins, and an array of seabirds such as albatrosses can also often be seen.

Every whale watching tour is a unique experience, and what you encounter may vary from day to day.

The modern catamaran is equipped with engines designed to minimise underwater noise and environmentally-friendly toilet facilities. Spacious outdoor decks provide plenty of space for observation and photography, while the indoor passenger cabin is enclosed and comfortable. Group sizes are deliberately kept small to ensure you enjoy a more personal experience.

If you’re after a more exclusive experience, you can purchase a ticket to the VIP Captain’s Cabin (max. 12 passengers). This cabin is situated within the wheelhouse area, allowing you to sit right by the captain. Here, you’ll enjoy extra-comfortable seating and the very best views, plus access to a private observation area on the top deck. There’s also a dedicated guide solely for VIP guests, and your VIP ticket includes a packed lunch and chilled drinks.
Of course, with a VIP Captain’s Cabin ticket, you’re free to move about the rest of the boat whenever you wish.

If you add on the tour from Christchurch, you’ll need to drive yourself to and from Kaikoura. The journey takes a minimum of 3 hours each way, but we recommend planning some exciting stops en route. Find inspiration for what you can experience along the way here: https://www.alpinepacific.nz/.

Starting and finishing point: Whale Watch Kaikoura, Whaleway Station Road (the address and departure time will be shown on your voucher). You must check in for the tour no later than 30 minutes before departure.
Please note that you are responsible for your own transport to and from Kaikoura.

Duration: Approx. 3.5 hours, including a briefing, with around 2 hours at sea.

Group size: Maximum 116 people, though usually fewer.

Included in the price – Oceans Cabin: Whale watching tour with a guide.

Included in the price – VIP Captain’s Cabin: Whale watching tour with a guide, packed lunch, and drinks.

Remember to bring: Clothes suited to the weather (ideally a wind- and waterproof jacket), sunglasses, a cap, camera, and, if necessary, seasickness tablets.

Please note: This tour operates several times a day, except on December 25th. A minimum of 15 passengers is required for the boat to depart. If this minimum is not met, you will of course receive a full refund.

This excursion is not suitable for young children. The minimum age for participation is 3 years old.
Depending on the weather and sea conditions, the whale watching tour may be changed or cancelled.

Although there is a good chance of spotting whales, they are wild animals, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
