TranzAlpine train across the South Island from Greymouth to Christchurch
Experience the dramatic landscapes of New Zealand as you journey across the South Island from Greymouth on the West Coast to Christchurch on the East Coast aboard one of the world’s most iconic rail journeys, the TranzAlpine.
Your adventure begins in Greymouth, where you’ll leave behind the wild beauty of the west coast and venture into the mountains. Along the way, you’ll pass the serene, mirror-like waters of Lake Brunner. Here, the train makes a short stop at the town of Moana. From there, the ascent begins through lush native forest and deep into the heart of the magnificent Southern Alps. Among the highlights is the impressive 8-kilometre-long Otira Tunnel, which runs beneath the Main Divide of the Southern Alps, before you reach Arthur’s Pass, a mountain pass surrounded by snow-capped peaks. In clear weather, take in panoramic views over deep gorges, rivers, and verdant rainforest, all gradually giving way to open highland plains as your train travels eastward.
Keep your camera ready as the train traverses the spectacular Staircase Viaduct, which raises the tracks 73 metres above Staircase Creek, a tributary of the Waimakariri River. Like the Otira Tunnel, this viaduct stands as another marvel of engineering.
At Springfield, the landscape opens up and the rolling Canterbury Plains mark the beginning of the lowlands, leading you towards your final destination, Christchurch.
The train features an open-air viewing carriage, where you can stand outside, breathe in the fresh air, enjoy the views, and capture stunning photographs. Be sure to bring warm clothing if you plan to spend time here. There’s also a café on board where you can purchase food and drinks.
Upon arrival at Christchurch railway station, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel.
