Whale watching in Weligama Bay (December to April)

You’ll be picked up from the hotel early in the morning and driven to Mirissa Harbour, where a boat is waiting to sail you out into Weligama Bay, a popular area for whale watching in the period from December to April.

On board, you’ll be given a life jacket and a packed breakfast, which you can enjoy along the way.

Over the next few hours, you’ll sail the waves of blue on the lookout for the giants of the ocean. The biggest draw is undoubtedly the blue whale, which can grow up to 30 metres long and weigh up to 200 tonnes, making it the world’s largest mammal. Blue whales generally swim alone unless the female has calves. You’re also in with a good chance of seeing the smaller sperm whales as well as pilot whales and killer whales.

Keep a close eye out for the big splashes, and you might be lucky enough to witness a real whale jump.

You might even see large sea turtles and playful dolphins, which are often close by.

If you’re prone to seasickness, we recommend that you take seasickness pills before the trip.

We recommend that you book the excursion when booking the tour.
