Mai Chau Ecolodge has been created with deep respect for both nature and the people who live in the area. Sustainability isn’t a stand-alone initiative; it’s a fundamental part of the ecolodge’s ethos. Every decision is made with the environment in mind and with a focus on creating value for the local community in Mai Chau.
The ecolodge sits on a private hilltop in Na Phon village, overlooking Mai Chau’s green rice paddies, forests, and mountain scenery. Here, nature is not just a backdrop; it’s an active part of your stay. More than 80% of the lodge’s grounds are preserved as open space, and over half is dedicated to greenery, with gardens, vegetable plots, and fruit orchards. The buildings are designed in harmony with their surroundings and built mainly from natural, locally sourced materials such as bamboo, wood, stone, and palm leaves. Materials are gathered from the nearby area and used respectfully so the lodge blends seamlessly into the landscape.
Care for the environment is woven into its day-to-day operations. The ecolodge uses renewable energy sources such as solar power and biomass from rice husks, and focuses on using resources thoughtfully. Single-use plastic has been significantly reduced, for example through the use of paper straws, ceramic containers, and refillable glass bottles. All wastewater is managed responsibly and treated before being returned to nature, ensuring it does not harm the surroundings.
Mai Chau is home to several of Vietnam’s ethnic minorities, and local culture sits at the heart of the ecolodge. Around 90% of the staff are recruited from nearby villages, many of whom belong to the area’s ethnic minorities. The team wears traditional dress from their own ethnic groups, giving guests an authentic insight into local traditions. The lodge’s architecture is inspired by traditional stilt houses, and the rooms are decorated with colourful textiles and patterns that reflect the region’s cultural heritage. In the evenings, you can enjoy traditional music and dancing that brings the quiet mountain nights to life.
Responsible tourism is a natural part of any stay at Mai Chau Ecolodge. A share of the lodge’s profits goes straight back into the local area, supporting education and social initiatives. Produce and materials are sourced locally, and as a guest, you’ll have the chance to learn more about the surrounding villages and their way of life, including through activities and workshops run by local artisans. At the same time, the ecolodge takes part in community initiatives such as clean-up days and tree planting. In this way, your stay helps preserve both the nature and the culture of Mai Chau.
