Today brings a fascinating journey into history as you visit the former Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), which during the Vietnam War marked the border between North and South Vietnam. The area is home to some of the most significant battlefields of the war and offers a powerful insight into Vietnam’s dramatic past.
You’ll be picked up from your hotel and head north towards the DMZ along Highway 1. The route takes you through a scenic, mountainous landscape with views of green mountain ranges fading into the distance.
The Demilitarised Zone stretches from the border between Vietnam and Laos in the west to the sea in the east. Despite its name, the area was far from peaceful. In fact, some of the fiercest battles of the war took place right here.
Your first stop is the Quang Tri Citadel, which was the centre of one of the war’s largest battles in 1972 between North Vietnamese forces and South Vietnamese troops supported by the United States.
From here, you’ll continue to the Hien Luong Bridge, which spans the Ben Hai River in the heart of the DMZ. The bridge once marked the border between North and South Vietnam and today stands as a symbol of the country’s divided past.
Not far from here, you’ll visit the remarkable Vinh Moc Tunnels, where an entire village lived underground for around two and a half years to seek protection from bombardments. In a small museum, you can admire photos and artefacts that offer a fascinating insight into the harsh conditions of life below ground.
After a traditional Vietnamese lunch, the tour continues to Khe Sanh, near the border with Laos, the site of one of the most famous battles of the Vietnam War in 1968.
You’ll return to Hué late in the afternoon after a day filled with powerful and moving historical experiences.
