Hiking the Inca Trail in Peru is a challenging yet enriching experience that brings you closer to the nature and the culture of this fascinating country. The classic 4-day trek on the Inca Trail takes you through breathtaking mountain passes, cloud forests and countless ancient Inca ruins.

To ensure your trip is a success, it’s crucial to pack smart and choose the right equipment.

In this blog post, we answer frequently asked questions about what to bring and provide you with a comprehensive packing list you can print out in preparation for your trip.

Frequently asked questions about what to pack for the Inca Trail trek

Who carries my equipment?

On the 4-day Inca trek, porters will transport camping equipment, food and up to 6kg of your personal luggage.

You will be given a bag in Peru to pack your personal luggage, which will be carried for you.

How big of a backpack should I bring?

We recommend choosing a backpack of around 30 litres with a hip belt and rain cover. It’s important to choose a lightweight and durable bag.

Also remember to pack your belongings in waterproof bags to protect them from dust and unexpected rain.

What clothes do I need to bring?

When it comes to choosing clothes for the Inca trek, it’s a good idea to think in layers. Temperatures can vary and it can get cold at night, especially when sleeping in a tent.

Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking materials that dry quickly and avoid cotton, which retains moisture. A mix of long trousers and shorts is ideal and be sure to bring a lightweight vest or jacket with multiple pockets to store essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent and a camera.

Sun protection is essential, so bring a hat and sunglasses as well as a reliable sunscreen.

Which hiking shoes should I choose?

When it comes to footwear, comfort is key.

On the Inca trek, you’ll be walking many kilometres on varied terrain. That’s why it’s a good idea to invest in a pair of waterproof hiking boots that fit your feet well.

Also bring a pair of comfortable shoes or sandals for relaxing after several days of hiking.
