Travelogue from Mexico: Isla Holbox

In June 2025, our experienced travel specialist Tom visited Mexico. Although it wasn’t his first tour to the country, this was his first time exploring Isla Holbox. Would the island live up to its reputation?

Just a 25-minute ferry ride from the mainland, you’ll find Isla Holbox. Although I’ve travelled to Mexico several times, this was my first visit to Isla Holbox, and I was genuinely excited to finally experience the island. I’d read about it and admired those paradise images of idyllic beaches, so I had high hopes for my first stay. But did it live up to my expectations?

Beach chairs with a view on Isla Holbox

After a quick ferry crossing from Chiquila to Isla Holbox, we were greeted by a golf buggy—the only motorised mode of transport on the island. Soon after, we arrived at our hotel, Villas HM Paraiso del Mar, located just outside town and steps from the beach. It’s just a 15-minute stroll along the sand to reach the town centre, passing plenty of other hotels and restaurants along the way.

Isla Holbox's beautiful beach

The beach was stunning, with powdery white sand and glorious turquoise waters. I couldn’t resist jumping straight into the warm, calm sea—no waves, just pure relaxation. It felt like sinking into a jacuzzi. The beach absolutely exceeded my expectations, and I could easily have spent days simply unwinding here. But it was time to discover what else I could fill my days with.

Visit to a beautiful cenote in Mexico

TourCompass offers two optional tours during your beach holiday on Isla Holbox, and naturally, I had to try them both. The first was a boat trip with stops at three islands, where you can encounter an abundance of birdlife, take a refreshing swim in a cenote, and visit even more stunning beaches. The second was an evening excursion to witness the phenomenon known as bioluminescence, where living organisms emit light. Two very different outings, each absolutely worth the experience.

In addition to the optional tours we offer, you can also book local excursions directly on the island. You’ll also have the chance to hire a golf cart to explore Isla Holbox at your own pace, or rent a bicycle—although do bear in mind that cycling can be quite a challenge, as most roads are sandy.

Street on Isla Holbox

The town itself on Isla Holbox has a charming, laid-back atmosphere, with sandy streets, a small plaza, little shops, supermarkets, and a tiny market where you can pick up souvenirs such as the iconic dreamcatchers, swimwear, handicrafts, and more. Naturally, you’ll find enticing eateries serving local Mexican specialities alongside internationally inspired dishes, as well as cosy cafés, lively bars offering delicious cocktails and mocktails, and tempting ice cream parlours.

Isla Holbox has so much more to offer than just its stunning beaches. You don’t have to spend all your time unwinding by the shore. I spent my days enjoying the perfect balance of relaxation and a variety of activities.

As the day draws to a close, the sunsets viewed from the beach are truly spectacular. It’s the perfect time to sip on a classic Mexican cocktail or a crisp, refreshing beer and soak in the view.
