Safari in Kenya

Kenya is home to some of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations. Here’s a selection of the national parks and reserves you can experience on a Kenya and Zanzibar twin centre holiday:

  • Masai Mara: For many, the very essence of a Kenyan safari – endless savannahs, remarkable wildlife all year round, and the spectacular wildebeest migration from July to October.
  • Amboseli National Park: One of Kenya’s smallest national parks, yet home to some of Africa’s grandest experiences, including vast herds of elephants with Kilimanjaro rising majestically in the background.
  • Lake Naivasha: A stunning freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley and a true paradise for bird lovers, offering the chance to spot fascinating hippos on a scenic boat trip.
  • Lake Nakuru National Park:  Especially famous for its rhinos (both white and black) and the countless flamingos that turn the lakeshores a striking shade of pink.
  • Samburu National Park: A national park in northern Kenya, home to the unique “special five”: the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, oryx, and Somali ostrich.

Beach holiday on Zanzibar

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, making it the perfect link on a combined tour of East Africa.

A tour to Zanzibar is a journey to one of the world’s most sought-after beach holiday destinations. Here, you’ll find an exotic island paradise in the Indian Ocean, just a short flight from Kenya. So, if you dream of rounding off your safari in Kenya with a stay on a tropical island with white beaches, turquoise waters, and a warm climate, combining Kenya and Zanzibar is the ideal choice.

The archipelago consists of two larger islands, Unguja and Pemba, as well as several smaller ones. When we refer to Zanzibar, we mean Unguja.

Although Zanzibar is best known for its paradise beaches, the island also offers a rich cultural heritage and plenty of exciting experiences, such as:

  • Stone Town: Zanzibar’s historic quarter. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the area is a maze of narrow alleyways, colourful markets, and a fascinating mix of African, Arab, and European influences.
  • Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park: The only national park on Zanzibar. Discover the lush rainforest and mangroves inhabited by tiny antelopes, an abundance of birdlife, and, if you’re lucky, the rare red colobus monkey, which can only be found here.
  • Exotic marine life beneath the surface: The coral reefs surrounding the island are home to more than 600 species of fish and 50 different types of coral, for example around Mnemba Island, which is particularly renowned for its colourful fish and superb snorkelling opportunities.

Frequently asked questions about Kenya and Zanzibar:

It’s perfectly natural to have questions when setting off on an adventure in Kenya and Zanzibar. How does a twin centre holiday work? When is the best time to travel? And what can I experience along the way?

Here, we’ve gathered answers to some of the questions we’re most often asked by our guests.

Is Zanzibar close to Kenya?

Although Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, the island lies only around 250 km from mainland Kenya.

The flight takes just under two hours.

Why should I combine a safari in Kenya with Zanzibar?

If you’re choosing between Mombasa or Zanzibar, the short answer is that Zanzibar is the perfect choice if you dream of adding a touch of tropical island atmosphere to your safari.

When is the best time to combine Kenya and Zanzibar?

The best time to travel to Kenya and Zanzibar is during the dry seasons, from January to mid-March and from June to October. During these months, the weather is usually dry with sunny days, warm temperatures, and little rainfall – perfect for both safari adventures and relaxing on the beach.

However, there are also advantages to travelling outside the peak season. For example, there are usually fewer visitors, meaning a more personal safari experience and lower prices. In addition, rainfall during the wet season often comes in short, intense showers, followed by clear skies.

Do I need vaccinations before travelling?

Most travellers will need vaccinations before travelling to Kenya and Zanzibar. We recommend consulting a specialist doctor or vaccination clinic for advice tailored to your situation.

Please be aware of the yellow fever regulations, especially if you are travelling via a country where the disease is present.

Is it safe to travel to Kenya and Zanzibar?

Yes – it is perfectly safe to go on a safari holiday in Kenya and enjoy a beach holiday on Zanzibar. Your safety means a great deal to us. We follow the official travel advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth
& Development Office and would never send our guests to destinations that are not considered safe to travel in.

No matter where in the world you travel, we always recommend that you follow official advice and exercise sensible precautions: avoid walking alone after dark, steer clear of deserted areas, and take good care of your valuables.
