Why choose a safari in Kenya?

On a tour to Kenya, you can look forward to discovering one of our most popular destinations for safaris in Africa.

With its world-famous national parks and exceptional natural beauty, Kenya offers everything you would associate with a classic African safari: open savannahs, impressive wildlife herds, and uninterrupted views across untamed landscapes.

Our Product Manager for Africa says the following about safari in Kenya:

“One of the things I love most about Kenya is the sheer variety of nature experiences, which you can pair with culture, buzzing city life, and time on the beach. Nairobi is a melting pot with an amazing food scene, and the powder-white sand at Diani on Kenya’s coast wins over even a non-beach person like me. But what I love above all is the nature in the country’s many national parks – from pancake-flat Amboseli, with Kilimanjaro soaring into the sky, to the dry, plateau-like landscapes of Samburu.”

– Winnie, travel expert and Product Manager for Africa

Our safari holidays in Kenya

With TourCompass, you can choose from a range of exciting safari holidays to Kenya, with or without a beach holiday.

Below, you can read about the experiences that await you in Kenya. See what’s included under each of our Kenya safari holidays.

Masai Mara

Masai Mara is arguably Kenya’s best-known wilderness area and the place to feel the true thrill of a safari up close. The savannah here is vast and open, and from the moment you wake, you can soak up views across the majestic Masai Mara and (perhaps) hear lions roaring in the distance.

Look forward to bringing your packed lunch in the Land Cruiser and savouring front-row views of nature’s tranquillity, surrounded by antelope, elephants, colourful birds, and iconic big cats.

It’s also here that you can get a behind-the-scenes look at one of nature’s most dramatic action films: the great wildebeest migration. Endless herds trek tirelessly between the Serengeti’s plains in Tanzania and the Masai Mara, and along the way they must cross the Mara River, where hungry crocodiles lurk in the water on the lookout for their next meal.

Amboseli National Park

Close to the Tanzanian border lies Amboseli National Park, whose unrivalled views of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, set the scene for unforgettable safari experiences. Kilimanjaro is the only thing that rises above the horizon here, as Amboseli itself is as flat as a pancake.

Despite its modest size, which makes Amboseli one of Kenya’s smallest national parks, the action starts at first light as you, perhaps still a little bleary-eyed, climb into your safari vehicle. We promise you’ll soon be wide awake when you come face to face with the park’s vast elephant herds, sometimes up to a hundred strong, along with beautiful zebras, masses of birdlife, and much, much more.

Tsavo National Park

In south-eastern Kenya you’ll find Tsavo National Park, the country’s largest and perhaps its most untamed. In fact, Tsavo is made up of two national parks, Tsavo East and Tsavo West, each offering some of Kenya’s most distinctive safari experiences.

Tsavo East is known for its distinctive red earth, and on safari here you can look forward to encountering elephants, giraffes, and buffalo coated in a reddish veil of dust that gives them an almost mystical appearance in the warm sunlight.

Tsavo West, on the other hand, is lush, with mountains and springs, such as Mzima Springs, surrounded by palms and acacia trees.

Both parks are home to rich and varied wildlife, including around 15,000 elephants, making Tsavo the national park in Kenya with the largest elephant population.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park sits in Kenya’s Rift Valley region and is one of the country’s most scenic parks, particularly renowned for its large population of both white and black rhinos.

We never promise sightings, but if you dream of seeing rhinos, Lake Nakuru is about as close to a rhino guarantee as you’ll get.

The lake also attracts thousands of flamingos and more than 450 bird species, making the park a haven for birdwatchers. However, you won’t find elephants here, as the park is enclosed by an electric fence to protect the rhinos.

Experiences in Nairobi

When you’re on safari in Kenya, it’s well worth combining it with a visit to the capital, Nairobi, which offers not only big-city buzz and Kenyan culture, but also some exciting nature experiences.

In Nairobi, you can visit the world’s only national park where wildlife roams against the backdrop of a city skyline: Nairobi National Park. The city is a melting pot of cultures, where you can stroll through street food markets and browse shops filled with local crafts.

Combine your Kenya safari with…

A safari is never just a safari. When you travel with TourCompass, you have plenty of ways to combine your safari so you get exactly the tour you’re dreaming of. See the options available under each tour.

Beach holiday

It makes perfect sense to pair your safari with a beach holiday – the best of both worlds.

Beach holiday in Kenya

After days packed with safaris and unforgettable encounters with nature, Kenya’s coast is the perfect place to park the safari vehicle and properly unwind. When you reach the coast and feel the warm breeze off the Indian Ocean, you’ll quickly understand why many choose to end their tour here: golden sandy beaches, balmy seas, and the calming sound of gentle waves.

On Diani Beach, you can look forward to powder-soft white sand between your toes and crystal-clear water for swimming. Spend your days snorkelling, heading out on boat trips, or taking an excursion to Mombasa.

If you’re after a more local and authentic atmosphere, Malindi is a natural choice. This small town offers Swahili architecture, little markets, and historic UNESCO-listed sights close by. Spend your days relaxing by the sea, and in the afternoon, wander Malindi’s charming streets and soak up the authentic coastal culture.

Beach holiday in Zanzibar

With its crystal-clear sea and soft white sands, Zanzibar in Tanzania is ideal if you’re dreaming of letting your safari memories sink in beneath a palm tree.

If you can’t get enough of new travel experiences, there’s plenty to do on Zanzibar too – for example, a trip to the old trading town of Stone Town.

Beach holiday on Mauritius

A tour to Mauritius is the epitome of tropical beach life, with powder-white sands, turquoise seas, and a laid-back vibe. The island is famed for its many outstanding beaches, such as Palmar, Tamarin, and Flic en Flac, as well as the little gems around Grand Baie. Here, soft sand, crystal-clear water, and wonderful experiences await, whether in, under, or on the water.

There’s plenty to experience in Mauritius beyond the beach. For example, visit the capital, Port Louis, hike in Black River Gorges National Park, or marvel at the multicoloured sand dunes at the Seven Coloured Earth Geopark.

Experiences in Madagascar

Combine a classic safari in Kenya with a tour to Madagascar to add truly unique, offbeat safari experiences to your travel memories.

In Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, you can encounter Madagascar’s endemic lemurs as you explore the landscape on foot with your guide. You’ll also gain an insight into the country’s fascinating cultural history in the capital, Antananarivo.

Safari in Tanzania

If you can’t get enough of classic safari, why not combine your Kenya safari with a safari in Tanzania.

Like Kenya, Tanzania is one of Africa’s most popular safari destinations, offering outstanding national parks, abundant wildlife, and spectacular scenery, for example in Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda

If you’re dreaming of a one-of-a-kind safari experience, round off your Kenya tour with a tour to Uganda. Here you can meet the fascinating mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to nearly half of the world’s wild mountain gorillas.

Answers to frequently asked questions about safari in Kenya

What is a safari in Kenya like?

A safari in Kenya takes place in a safari vehicle with an experienced local guide who knows the areas, the wildlife, and the best times to head out. Your day might, for example, begin early in the morning with a game drive while the animals are most active. If you’re on a full-day safari, you’ll spend the whole day out in nature with stops along the way for sightings and meals, often at a scenic spot inside the park.

Please note: The programme may vary depending on the area, time of year, and your preferences. You can often help shape the day together with your guide.

When is the best time to go on safari in Kenya?

Most people prefer to go on safari in Kenya during the dry season, from June to October. The weather is warm and dry and, with sparse vegetation after many months without rain, it’s easier to spot the wildlife.

There are, however, certain advantages to going on safari in the rainy season, when nature shows off its most beautiful, lush side. Downpours are often short and intense, so you’re likely to enjoy plenty of dry hours during your safari.

How much does it cost to go on safari in Kenya?

The price of a safari in Kenya varies depending on the length of the tour, the itinerary, and your departure date.

All our safari holidays include flights, transfers, safari activities, National Park fees, and more.

It’s more expensive to travel in the high season, for example during the summer holidays and over Christmas and New Year, and it’s cheaper outside the high season. You can view our starting prices for each safari holiday.

Request a quote to receive the final price based on your departure date, selected airport, and any adjustments or upgrades.

How many days should you set aside for a safari in Kenya?

We recommend allowing 3-4 days of safari once you’ve travelled all that way. Our shortest safari holiday in Kenya lasts 9 days (including outbound and return travel) and includes around 3 days of safari in Amboseli and the Masai Mara.

The length of your tour depends on what you want to experience and whether you’d like to combine it with a beach holiday.

Where do you stay on safari in Kenya?

On safari in Kenya, you’ll usually stay in lodges or camps.

Lodges are typically comprised of cabins of different sizes, and many offer facilities such as a swimming pool, a restaurant, and other amenities.

Wild camps and other camps are typically located either inside the national parks or close to their boundaries. Here, you will stay in spacious, permanent tents with a solid floor and full standing height – and with a private bathroom and toilet, so your comfort is still excellent, even in the heart of nature.

Is it safe to go on safari in Kenya?

Yes, it is safe to go on safari in Kenya.

The animals are used to vehicles and do not perceive them as a threat. Our experienced guides have an in-depth understanding of animal behaviour and the rules that apply in the national parks. After a day on safari, you will always be escorted back to your accommodation by a Maasai after dark if you are staying at an unfenced property.

Can children go on safari?

Going on a safari holiday in Kenya with your children is a fantastic experience

There are, however, several important factors to consider, such as the length of the tour, travel time, and your children’s ages and travel experiences.
