Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Departure from chosen airport

Today, departure is from your chosen airport, and the journey takes you to Kenya in East Africa with connecting flight(s) along the way.

Day 2: Arrival in Kenya and transfer to Malindi

Upon arrival in Kenya, you’ll be greeted at the airport and driven to your hotel north of Mombasa. The drive takes a couple of hours, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the scenery.

You’ll be welcomed at the hotel with a cold drink, and the rest of the day is yours to relax after your journey.

Accommodation:
Day 3: Relaxation in Malindi

The day is yours to unwind and enjoy the sun and sea.

If you’re keen to explore the Malindi area, the reception can always suggest great excursions.

There’s plenty of history and culture nearby.

The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed in Malindi in 1498, where he was received by the Sheikh of Malindi, who ruled the district at that time. However, even several hundred years prior, Malindi served as an export port for spices, gold, ivory – and slaves, and Malindi was, when Vasco da Gama arrived, a significant city on Kenya’s coast.

In the late 1500s, the Portuguese began constructing Fort Jesus further south – at Mombasa – and moved their Kenyan headquarters there. Mombasa is situated on an island, and the Portuguese likely believed an island city was easier to defend against enemies, of which there were plenty during those years.

South of Malindi, you’ll also find the Gede ruins, which are the remnants of a Swahili town supposedly abandoned around the same time the Portuguese moved from Malindi to Mombasa. Why Gede was abandoned remains a matter of speculation, but the truth is, everyone forgot about Gede for centuries! Today, the ruins are part of UNESCO’s world heritage list for cultural preservation.

Hell’s Kitchen north of Malindi is also worth a visit. A hike here showcases dramatic rock formations, apparently earning it the nickname of a smaller version of the Grand Canyon.

Hire a small catamaran to sail on the turquoise sea or book a snorkelling trip to Malindi Marine National Park. There’s no shortage of things to do, unless you’d just prefer to enjoy the resort and stroll along the shore.

Accommodation:
Day 4: Departure on safari in Tsavo East

It’s now time to experience a glimpse of Kenya’s stunning natural landscapes and wildlife.

From Malindi, the journey leads to Kenya’s largest national park, Tsavo East.

You’ll stay two nights at a charming safari camp close to Sala Gate in the north-eastern part of the park. It’s just a few hours drive from Malindi to the part of the park that sees fewer tourists than the south-western section.

The afternoon is free to enjoy the camp – perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to spot elephants passing by?

Accommodation:
Day 5: Safari in Tsavo East National Park

Prepare for a genuine safari day filled with excitement.

What you encounter today is anybody’s guess! And that’s precisely what makes a safari so captivating. It’s entirely on nature’s terms and brings the wonderful opportunity to let go of everything and simply absorb whatever you see.

The park’s reddish elephants (they get their red hue from the soil) are, for many, an absolute highlight. Tsavo, in fact, boasts the largest number of elephants in all of Kenya – estimated at around 15,000.

In addition to elephants, Tsavo East is home to lions, buffaloes, leopards, hippos, and many more animals. There have also been 500 different species of birds recorded in the park.

The day kicks off with a safari after breakfast, and the morning is spent on a game drive. Around noon – during the worst heat when the animals rest – you will head back to the camp where lunch awaits. There’s time for a bit of relaxation and perhaps a nap before you head back out on safari in the afternoon. When darkness falls, you will return to the camp for a lovely dinner.

Accommodation:
Day 6: Safari experiences and return to Malindi

After a good night’s sleep, another morning filled with safari experiences awaits. You might have heard rustling outside your tent at night, and perhaps there are tracks in the sand that the guide can help you interpret.

After breakfast, you will set off on another game drive. Remember, the more eyes on the lookout, the greater the chance of spotting something – big or small. Also, be sure to take in the stunning landscapes. Safari is not just about the animals, but about the nature as a whole.

After one last lunch at the camp, it’s time to return to the coast, and most will undoubtedly be tempted by a dip in the blue waves to wash away the safari dust.

Accommodation:
Days 7-11: Relaxation and beach holiday in Malindi

The days are yours to enjoy the resort, go on excursions, take walks, read books, and generally just soak up the holiday atmosphere.

The hotel can assist if you’re keen to take an excursion to some of the attractions in the area.

There’s a transfer to the airport with plenty of time before your journey home. Of course, you can also choose to extend your stay by another night if you wish.
