Travelogue from Tanzania: the truly amazing Serengeti

Liam, our Guest Relations Specialist, went on a safari in Tanzania for the first time in May 2025. What he experienced left him speechless (and for those of us who know him, that’s saying something). Read about his experiences in Serengeti National Park below.

Liam at the intrance to the Serengeti

When you see something that leaves you truly amazed, you immediately want to write down your thoughts. For me, coming down into Serengeti National Park after leaving the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, I was just astonished by the almost alien-like landscape that unfolded before us from the jeep.

We start to approach from up high, and as we start to descend closer towards the entrance to the National Park, a majestic Giraffe greets us from under the treetops, hiding from the midday sun.

The open plains of the Serengeti

From this height, you can see for miles and miles in every direction, the animals that make the National Park their home appear as small as ants, trees are scattered here and there, providing shade for weary creatures to rest. The environment is harsh and seems so distant from our home comforts.

Just before we enter the park, a small herd of Zebra make their presence known, as if they are greeting us to their home. Up close, you could be convinced for thinking their black stripes were, in fact, brown, but this was just a sign of their age.

Even after just a few minutes into the Serengeti, we had our first sighting of Lions. Our guide drove us toward a pair resting after their lunch — the female kept watch as the male lounged nearby. Thanks to the open-top roof of the jeep, we could take in the scene and capture them in all their glory.

We were even lucky enough to witness a herd of elephants, making their way through the bush in their large numbers. They would get so close to where your jeep was parked, it provided the best opportunity to look at all their features in such detail!

The Serengeti is home to many animals, including many of what we know as the ‘Big 5’ (consisting of lions, leopards, elephants, rhino and buffalo). During our time there, we were lucky to witness to four of the Big 5, with the Rhinoceros going unseen during our time there.  During our visit in late May, the great Migration was also occurring in the Serengeti, with the landscape dotted with hundreds, if not thousands, or wildebeest and zebra making their way North for the winter months.

Just as we are about to leave the Serengeti for our first day, the radio flashes, and our guide lets us know that a leopard has been spotted in a nearby tree. We quickly made our way to the area, and our guide provided us with the perfect spot to capture the Leopard in all of her majesty.

It is one thing to witness some of these animals in your local zoo, but the feeling of witnessing so many of the world’s most famous creatures, in their natural environment, is a feeling that is difficult to beat. And Tanzania, and Serengeti National Park, offered this to us in abundance.
